Glasgow Housing Authority charges off over $40,000

The Housing Authority of Glasgow Board of Directors unanimously voted to approve over $40,000 in outstanding move-out balances as charge offs at their monthly Dec. 19 meeting.

Operations Officer Sheri Lee said the authority was still going to seek repayment on the $40,397.92 but had to have these charge offs approved to “start the year off with fresh books.” The authority is on a calendar year rather than a fiscal year, which typically begins on July 1 and goes until June 30.

This outstanding balance brings the average charge offs to $1,122.17, which is an increase from the $762 average charge off in 2023. Lee said the increase is due primarily to a couple of big outstanding balances where people have falsified documents when applying for housing assistance. For example, one is nearly $3,400 and another is roughly $8,200.

Lee said this outstanding balance wouldn’t affect the authority’s overall budget but could affect their standing with the federal authority.
