The Skilled Nursing Unit at T.J. Samson Community Hospital was recently recognized as one of the best short-term rehabilitation nursing homes for 2025 by U.S. News and World Report.

Jim Reid, administrator over the unit, said it was the third year they have received this recognition and credited the distinction largely to the “continuity” of care a patient receives while in their unit.

The unit is among the 19 percent of the 15,000 nursing homes evaluated by U.S. News that received the “Best Nursing Home” designations. According to the press release, the report ranked nursing homes “on care, safety, infection rates, staffing, and health inspections.”

The report has T.J. Samson Community Hospital listed as a “high performer” with over 68 percent of residents able to return home after being discharged, which is well above both the national and state average, no “falls with major injuries” and a 5.6 percent in infections that require hospitalization.

“It’s a great honor to share that T.J. Samson’s Skilled Nursing Unit is considered among the top facilities nationwide,” said William Thornbury, medical director for the Skilled Nursing Unit. “This esteemed designation reflects the unwavering commitment and leadership of the entire team of dedicated professionals. Our superior rehabilitation and nursing teams and administrators all contribute collectively with tireless and exceptional work. These wonderful professionals are the cornerstone of our success and it is through their dedication that our health system is able to offer such outstanding care to the community.”

The short-term rehabilitation rating also includes measures of a home’s success in preventing falls, preventing serious infections, and making sure residents are able to return home.

“We are blessed to have the Skilled Nursing Unit at T.J. Samson lead the way in excellence,” Jamie Wilkerson, chief nursing officer at T.J. Regional Health, said. “Their successes stem from how the dedicated staff prioritizes individualized treatment by ensuring plans of care are specific to goals for discharge.  SNU stands as a beacon of compassionate care for the community and watching all the departments involved is impressive.”
