Glasgow Square is gearing up for a night of Halloween fun this Thursday, Oct. 24 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Motorists should plan accordingly as the Glasgow Square will be closed at 3 p.m.

The event is presented by the local organization, Bounty of the Barrens and its nonprofit Sustainable Glasgow.

Glasgow-Barren County Tourism posted on its website that the event will feature, “Food trucks, live music, and a ‘Trunk or Treat’ featuring local businesses and community organizations.”

The event has drawn around 30 different businesses ready to participate in the chilling community collaboration according to Bounty representative, Sarah Shirley.

“We’re super excited,” she said. “We used to do more events around three or four a year, but now we do just the ‘scare’ event in October right before Halloween.”

Events from years past have been a marked success, Shirley said, with about 2,000 children attending. “A lot of kiddos show up. So this year we’ve closed the entire square.”

This year, planners have also accommodated food trucks for attendees, which Shirley has teased will offer, “Everything pulled-pork.”

After being around for nearly 20 years the organization’s contributors have endeavored to bring attention to local events, as well as the economic impact that the community’s teamwork affects.

One of the many local institutions taking part in the festivities is Glasgow Police Department. While safety may be its primary focus, the department also wants to see the county come out for a frighteningly fun time as GPD Major Terry Flatt pointed to, “We will have a booth set up with candy, games and even a photo booth.”

With a fortuitous forecast, the department is ready for a large turnout.

Flatt said the department, “Invites everyone to come and enjoy the event, and hopes to see everyone there.”

Sustainable Glasgow has worn their mission on their sleeve, with this event making a mark in its notched belt of events since its inception in 2008.

“We love being downtown in Glasgow,” Shirley said. “It’s fun every Saturday morning.”

Shirley reminded that the Bounty of the Barrens’ Farmers Market also takes place each weekend, with this Saturday being special as vendors will be ready to hand out candy to the macabre menagerie of masked masses for those that can’t make it for Thursday’s shindig.
