Nikki Shelton will not seek reelection this November. She is the Barren County Board of Education member who represents the fifth district, which is in the south east corner of Barren County, .
Shelton said she decided to not run, or even file, for reelection due to expecting a fourth child, which will join her other children Weston, Journie and Jay Luke.
Though, she may run again in the future, she added.
She said her proudest accomplishment during her term is how the board handled the pandemic and the growth she has seen during her four years.
“I am proud of how our board, administrators, staff and parents were able to keep our students and their best interest at the forefront of all [our] decisions…through those times,” Shelton wrote. “There has been so much growth in the district over the past few years and I am proud…our district continues to strive to create success for all students.”
With Shelton not running for her seat there is no one running. Based on information from the Kentucky Department of Education, the Board of Education seat will be declared vacant on Jan. 1 if no one is elected to fill it and the board will have 60 days to fill a vacancy.
Kentucky Revised Statute 160.190 states the vacancy should be filled by a vote of the majority of members and within the first 30 days post “a notice announcing the vacancy on the district’s website and by placing an advertisement in the newspaper” and solicit qualified applications for two weeks.
Shelton is currently in her first term as a board member.
Boards member Shelly Groce, District 4, and second district board member Brad High are running for reelection. They are unopposed.
