Dr. Darl Neil Peterie

Dr. Darl Neil Peterie, age 94, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, passed away Friday, September 27, 2024 surrounded by his family.

The Laredo, Missouri native was born March 25, 1930. He was a Professor of Art Emeritus at Western Kentucky University and a former teacher in Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois. He received his bachelor’s degree at Truman State University and his masters and doctorate degrees at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was active in promoting the visual arts in South Central Kentucky for over 50 years as an artist, curator, and a teacher. Among his many hobbies were reading novels, watching movies, watching sports and playing musical instruments. Neil believed strongly in honesty and hard work, and instilled those beliefs in his family and his students.

He was the son of the late Alvin Darl Peterie and Isabel Grabast Peterie. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary Joyce Arbuckle Peterie; their infant son Anthony Wayne Peterie; and one brother Stephen Gerald Peterie. Survivors include two sons; James Ernest and his wife Carolyn, and Stanley Taylor and his wife Connie; one daughter Peggy Lynn Hudson and her husband Clint, all of Bowling Green. Six grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren, also survive.

Cremation was chosen and a private service will be held. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice of Southern Kentucky.
