The Community Relief Fund (CRF) Food Pantry is once again mobilizing the Barren County community for the 15th annual “To the Brim” food drive, set to take place from August 28 to August 31. This comes at a critical time as inflation and other factors have exacerbated a lack of affordable and consistent nutrition to struggling residents and families.
Recent statistics from Feeding America highlight the growing need in Barren County, where the overall food insecurity rate has climbed to 18.2%. This means that over 8,120 residents, or nearly one in five, are struggling to access enough food for a healthy life. Even more concerning is the situation for children in the area—24.7% of children, or about one in four, face food insecurity.
This well-established event is critical in restocking the pantry’s shelves, providing much-needed support to local families facing food insecurity. Residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items at collection points located at Houchens-South Gate, Walmart, and Barren River Plaza. Additionally, for those seeking a convenient way to contribute, $10 ready bags can be purchased and deposited in designated bins at these locations.
Financial donations are also being accepted and can be sent to the CRF at 317-A Columbia Avenue, Glasgow, KY 42141.
These funds play an essential role in maintaining the food pantry’s operations, allowing for the purchase of additional food and supplies throughout the year. Organizers highlight the importance of community involvement, with this year’s theme being “community at its best, taking care of its own.”
For more information or to get involved, residents can reach out to Dr. Mody at 270-308-0435 or Stacy Janes at 270-651-9006. With the community’s help, the CRF Food Pantry hopes to reach its goal of fully stocking its shelves, ensuring that no one in Barren County goes hungry during these trying times.
