Glasgow residents will once again have the opportunity to safely dispose of household hazardous waste and securely shred personal documents at the city’s annual event, set for Saturday, August 24. The event, now in its second decade, will take place at Beaver Creek Park from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
Glasgow City Administrator, April Russell, spoke on how this event is funded.
Audio PlayerThis long-running event offers a safe and convenient way to dispose of potentially harmful household materials. Accepted items include everything from oil-based paints and pesticides to pharmaceuticals and electronic waste. Residents can also bring items like propane cylinders under 30 pounds, fire extinguishers, batteries and even medical waste.
However, certain materials; latex paint, explosives, and large appliances (which are accepted at the landfill daily) will not be accepted.
Boasting on the team handling the hazardous waste, Russell had this to say.
Audio PlayerIn addition to hazardous waste collection, the event will offer free document shredding services for individuals, a service that is highly anticipated by many in the community.
Over the years, the event has seen an average of 200 vehicles, with participants eager to safely dispose of confidential papers. The shredding service, operated by Lakeside Recycling, Inc., typically processes around 9,000 pounds of paper each year. Items such as paper, phone books, and newspaper are accepted, but restrictions apply—plastics, hardback books, and binders are not allowed.
With good humor, Russell expounded on the shredding part of the project.
Audio PlayerRussell went onto explain that the city has a vested interest, not just in its residents, but also in the overall ecological health of the county.
Audio PlayerAll collected items, whether hazardous waste or shredded paper, will be responsibly recycled as part of Glasgow’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The city continues to emphasize the importance of safe disposal and recycling practices, encouraging residents to take advantage of this annual service.
Russell elaborated on why these items could impact local ecology if improperly disposed of.
