Mammoth Cave National Park Announces Temporary Power Outage for Hotel Building

Aug 19, 2024 | 11:37 AM

Visitors to Mammoth Cave National Park should expect a temporary disruption in services at the park’s main hotel building on Wednesday, August 21, as Kentucky Utilities (KU) undertakes a powerline relocation project. The electric power will be shut off from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., affecting several visitor amenities, including food operations at Lantern Café, Green River Grill, and Maple Springs Coffee and Gifts, as well as retail shops within the hotel.

Park officials emphasize that other popular areas of the park, such as the visitor center, cave tours, campground, and camp store, will remain fully operational during the power outage. However, the Old Guides Trail and portions of the Heritage Trail adjacent to the hotel will be closed for the duration of the work.

The powerline relocation is necessary due to ongoing construction at the Family Cabin site, located near the hotel. The outage is expected to last up to five hours but could be shorter, depending on the complexity of the project. Park services at the affected locations will resume as soon as possible once the work is completed.

Park officials also noted that the project is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.

For those interested in more details about the ongoing improvements at the park, including the Family Cabins construction, additional information can be found on the park’s website.
