This holiday season, Glasgow’s Historic Plaza Theatre will come alive with the cherished classic, “A Christmas Story,” thanks to the Far Off Broadway Players. Known for bringing the magic of theater to the local community, the group is holding open auditions for this beloved production, set to debut in December.
The auditions will commence with two of the main roles: young Ralphie Parker and the narrator, Ralph Parker. This stage adaptation of the iconic movie presents unique differences. Unlike the film, where Ralphie narrates the story without appearing on screen, the play features Adult Ralph narrating from the stage and interacting within multiple characters. This creative choice by the playwright Grecian aims to deepen the audience’s understanding of Ralphie and Adult Ralph’s relationship.
Auditions for the roles of Ralphie and the narrator will be held on Saturday, August 24, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Far Off Broadway Players’ rehearsal studio. Interested children and adults are encouraged to participate, with auditions for additional roles scheduled for September.
The character roster is as follows:
– Ralphie Parker, age 9-14: The hero of the story, determined to get a Red Ryder BB gun.
– Randy Parker, age 6-10: Ralphie’s baby brother.
– Flick, age 9-14: One of Ralphie’s best friends and sidekicks.
– Schwartz, age 9-14: Another of Ralphie’s close friends.
– Esther Jane, age 9-14: Ralphie’s classmate and crush.
– Helen, age 9-14: The prototype nerd and classmate of Ralphie.
– Scut Farkas, age 12-16: The schoolyard bully.
– Ralph Parker, age 40+: The adult version of Ralphie, serving as the narrator.
– The Old Man, 35+: Ralphie’s grumpy, contest-obsessed father.
– Mother, 30+: Ralphie’s frazzled, loving mother.
– Miss Shields, any age: Ralphie’s bewildered teacher.
General auditions for all roles will take place on Friday, September 20th, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturday, September 21st, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Each session will be divided into 10-minute slots, requiring advance registration. Prospective actors can download the audition packet, review the character descriptions, and register online at the Far Off Broadway Players’ website. During auditions, participants may be asked to read for multiple characters.
