Paying it forward to the Boys and Girls Club in the name of Joey Stockton

Aug 5, 2024 | 11:11 AM

As the community mourns Joey Stockton and his generous spirit, people are finding ways to honor his legacy of giving.  One example is Corey Edwards and Hibbett Sports of Glasgow, who gifted the children of the Boys and Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County 80+ pairs of new shoes.

“Joey and Amy both have been great supporters of our mission. Joey has always supported fundraising efforts, donated much needed items such as gaming systems for our new E-Sports Lounge, and was always reaching out to encourage our staff to keep fighting the good fight. Amy from her background in behavioral support has always kept us involved with supporting clients in need,” said Mallie Boston, CEO at Boys and Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County.

The majority of the shoes donated were given out to members at an event last week.

“Corey created a beautiful event for the youth and shared a few words about wanting to honor a special friend of his and the club while doing so. Corey made sure the entire club was fed with pizza and shaved ice. From the club’s perspective, we are thrilled to be a part of something that we know Joey would’ve been excited about. Anytime our youth get things like this we get excited because it’s much needed,” Boston said.

For Edwards, the idea to donate the shoes was a culmination of many things, including the death of his good friend Joey Stockton, and his 12-year-old daughter Kynleigh’s big heart.

“We were shoe shopping, me and my kids, and we overheard some people talking about the price of shoes. I grew up with nothing, and I always wanted a pair of Jordans, so it hit home.  Then my daughter, who has a huge heart and inspires me everyday, asked if we could donate some shoes.  We picked the Boys and Girls Club, because my friend Joey always played such a big role there and the club was dear to him,” Edwards said.   Edwards had a limited amount of money to spend, so he reached out to Bronson Wells, the manager of Hibbett Sports of Glasgow.

“He gave me a great deal.  We couldn’t have done this much without their generosity,” Edwards said.

Aside from meeting the immediate needs of the kids of the club, in the big picture Edwards hopes this inspires others to give to the community.

“I hope others feel inspired like I did,” he said. “We live in a great community and there are always opportunities to give.”
