In a press release from the school district on Monday, Letitia Hughes has been selected as the new principal of Barren County High School. Mrs. Hughes began her career in public education at Metcalfe County Middle School (1994-1998), where she taught language arts and agriculture. In 1998, she began her tenure at Barren County High School, where she has served as an English teacher, Beta sponsor, Academic Team Coach, Curriculum Specialist, Gifted and Talented Coordinator, and AP Language and Composition Teacher. She currently serves as a BCHS Assistant Principal and Principal of the Early College Magnet Program, a position she has held since 2012. Having spent the last 26 years of her career at Barren County High School, Mrs. Hughes brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and deep commitment to her new role as BCHS Principal.
WCLU News spoke with Hughes just moments after the announcement. Here are her comments:
Letitia is a graduate of Western Kentucky University, where she earned a Bachelor’s in Middle Grades Education with a Minor in Agriculture (1994), a Master’s in Middle Grades Education (1998), and a Rank I in Educational Leadership (2010).
Amy Irwin, the incoming Superintendent of Barren County Schools, expressed her confidence in Mrs. Hughes, stating, “Mrs. Hughes has demonstrated true dedication to the students and staff of Barren County High School. Her commitment to excellence and powerful work ethic make her a strong leader, and I am certain she will guide our students and staff towards continued excellence.”
Mrs. Hughes commented, “BCHS is in its finest hour yet. The “Yet” excites me beyond measure. As the new principal of Barren County High School, I plan to build upon the successes we are so graciously celebrating as a school. BCHS is certainly in a growth period- climbing to the green level on the state’s accountability system, and new opportunities for our students are in the works, as evidenced by the numerous construction projects all over our campus. Although all of our current programs and these new enhancements to campus are certainly impressive, our strongest asset is our people. The amazing BCHS students, talented staff, caring families, and our supportive community are the heart of the 50-year BCHS legacy. I look forward to advancing that strong BCHS legacy as the new principal.”
Mrs. Hughes will officially begin her duties as BCHS Principal on July 1.
