In a move that marries tradition with community outreach, Edmonton’s Masonic Lodge recently held a ‘Friend to Friend’ event, an initiative designed to introduce prospective members to the storied organization.
This rare gathering marks the first such event in years, according to Lonnie Jessie, the current Master Mason of the lodge. For those unfamiliar with Freemasonry, it is one of the world’s oldest and most respected fraternal organizations. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, the society is known for its philanthropic endeavors, commitment to personal development, and emphasis on moral and ethical living.
The ‘Friend to Friend’ event was structured to demystify the Masonic experience, offering attendees an insider’s perspective on what it means to be a Mason.
Current members were encouraged to bring along friends they believe embody the principles and virtues that Freemasonry upholds. This initiative not only fosters a sense of camaraderie but also provides a glimpse into the fraternity’s enduring values.
The morning was a blend of formal presentations and informal conversations, ensuring that guests could comfortably explore the breadth of Masonic teachings. Attendees were introduced to the rich history of the lodge, significant Masons from the present and past, and the numerous charitable projects that the lodge supports both locally and nationally.
One such event being the week prior, as the lodge partnered with the Metcalfe County Animal Shelter for a fundraising fish fry, which saw an outpouring of support from members of the lodge and community. Ralph Gentry, long time Mason and honorary member of the Edmonton lodge, pointed to another example in the recent past which saw Masons from across the Commonwealth come together in solidarity and altruism.

One highlight of the event was a guided tour of the lodge’s meeting room, where the intricate architecture and symbolism were on full display.
“Freemasonry is often seen as a secret society, but in reality, it’s a society with secrets,” Gentry explained.
Gentry went on to disillusion the crowd of some of the more negative rumors that have bedeviled the organization for centuries, also espousing his opinion on the reason why so much misinformation exists.

The ‘Friend to Friend’ event was met with enthusiasm from both current members and prospective candidates. It served not only as a recruitment tool but also as an educational experience, shedding light on an organization that often operates behind closed doors.
As the event drew to a close, many guests expressed their interest in learning more, taking the first steps towards potentially becoming a part of this venerable institution.
In an era where community and connection are more important than ever, the lodge’s efforts to reach out and share their values reflect a commitment to building a better, more understanding society—one friend at a time.
