Downtown EV charge stations see increased usage

Jun 14, 2024 | 8:52 AM

GLASGOW, KY  –  If you’ve been to the South-Central Kentucky Cultural Center lately, or behind our radio station, you’ll notice two electric vehicle charging stations.  Those stations were part of a joint effort between the Glasgow Electric Plant Board, TVA, and the city of Glasgow.  In the nearly seven months those charging stations have been in use, visitors from 20 different states have utilized them.

As part of a TVA initiative, the electricity distributor is working to build infrastructure for the growing sector of electric vehicles that are on our roadways today.  The Glasgow EPB, like other local providers across TVA’s seven-state service area, was allowed two charging stations as part of the initiative.  The Tennessee Valley Authority funded 80% of the cost.

These particular charging stations are the Fast Charge stations. EV drivers access the location as part of the Fast Charge KY program.  Aaron Russell, Marketing and Communications Director for the Glasgow EPB, says these two stations in Glasgow are very efficient; more so than your average station.

As for how the process works for someone stopping in for a charging session, Wade Brewer, Operations Engineer for the Glasgow EPB, explains how the process works.

With the fast charge station, users are spending between 45 minutes to an hour-and-a-half in the heart of downtown Glasgow.  When determining a location for the two units, the downtown commerce impact was highly influential in the decision to move to the location in the parking lot of the cultural center.

Data from the charging stations shows an exponential increase in usage since the stations were installed in November of 2023.
