Hart County Fiscal Court Meeting Highlights Animal Shelter Challenges and New Hire

Jun 13, 2024 | 6:00 AM

The Hart County Fiscal Court convened on Tuesday, June 11th, for a meeting that was largely uneventful, save for a concerning report from Tony Roberts, the director of the Hart County Animal Shelter, and the announcement of a new hire following a closed session.

Tony Roberts delivered a sobering report on the state of the county’s animal shelters. He highlighted the ongoing struggle with overpopulation at both shelter locations, which has put considerable strain on resources and staff.

Roberts also pointed out a significant structural flaw at one of the shelters, which lacks inside draining capabilities. This deficiency complicates the cleaning process, adding to the workload and stress faced by the shelter staff.

Roberts’ report underscored the urgent need for solutions to address both the overpopulation crisis and the infrastructural inadequacies at the shelter.

The only other notable item on the agenda was the court’s decision to hire Shane Butler, the current Chief Information Officer for Hart County Schools.

This decision came after the council emerged from a closed session. While the court has yet to finalize Butler’s official title, it was revealed that his role would be multifaceted, with a primary focus on information technology (IT) work.

Hart County Judge Executive, Joe Choate, explained to attendees what Butler’s new job would look like.

The meeting, though mostly routine, highlighted critical issues facing Hart County, particularly in animal welfare and administrative operations.

Residents will be watching closely as the Fiscal Court addresses the animal shelter’s needs and integrates Butler into his new role.
