BOWLING GREEN – After a tough battle, Barren County came up short after falling to the South Warren Lady Spartans 4-2 in the 4th Region Championship at WKU’s Softball Complex on Thursday.
“I’ve been coaching for 20+ years and this is one of the most humble, hard-working group of 20 girls I’ve ever had,” said head coach Daryl Murphy. “It’s not about this destination or Championship game, it’s about how they handled the journey to the destination. That’s what they’ll remember the most and that’s what builds their character and builds them as a softball player.” Listen to WCLU’s full interview with coach Daryl Murphy below:
The matchup lived up to the anticipation as both teams’ defenses came to play throughout the showdown. After three and a half innings, the score remained tied at zero. However, in the bottom of the fourth, South Warren’s Courtney Norwood singled down the middle to bring Keegan Pruitt home from second. The Lady Spartans furthered their lead in the bottom of the fifth after Barren County’s Shea Bouge walked a runner home in a bases-loaded situation. The bats continued to connect for South Warren, as the Lady Spartans took a commanding 4-0 lead after six innings. Drama stuck in the top of the seventh for the Trojanettes after Briley Aidala singled to left-field to drive in two runs, cutting South Warren’s lead to two. With two on base, and one out left, The Lady Spartans got the out, securing their spot in the State Softball Tournament.
Barren County advanced to the fourth region championship after downing both defending region champ, Greenwood (9-4/quarterfinals), and Russellville (10-6/semi-finals).
The Trojanettes finished their 2024 season with a 28-8 record, placing first in the 15th district and capturing the Championship for the fifth time in six years, after defeating Warren East 8-5 at Allen County-Scottsville High School.
