The Glasgow Garden Club, known for its longstanding commitment to community beautification and environmental stewardship, is set to embark on a significant project this year.
Sonja Woodcock, president of the club and Glenda Eaton, both spoke to WCLU about how the club members work to see the scape of Glasgow bloom.
While the garden club’s primary focus is endemic conservation Eaton punctuated that community service is also deeply rooted within the club.
The club will be revitalizing the grounds of the Lera B. Mitchell Clubhouse, continuing its tradition of enhancing local spaces for the beautification of community.
The revitalization effort at the clubhouse will include a comprehensive range of activities aimed at restoring and ennobling the area. Club members are engaging in weeding, mulching, tree extractions, and other landscaping tasks.

The garden club’s roots run deep in the Glasgow community.
The club’s contributions to the community are well-documented. In 2020, the Glasgow Garden Club donated a marble bench to the Shanti Niketan Hospice care facility. This gesture provided a peaceful spot for reflection and rest, demonstrating the club’s commitment to creating tranquil and supportive environments for those in need.
In addition to its landscaping projects, the Glasgow Garden Club is also actively involved in youth engagement and education through its Junior Garden Club.

Junior Garden Club Member Emma Garrett presents her award-winning poster.
Emma Garrett, a young and enthusiastic member of the Junior Garden Club, recently achieved notable success in a statewide and South-Atlantic regional competition. Emma’s poster, depicting Smokey the Bear, earned her first place, highlighting the club’s role in nurturing young talent and promoting environmental awareness among the younger generation.
As the Glasgow Garden Club prepares for the revitalization of the Lera B. Mitchell Clubhouse grounds, the community can anticipate a renewed and vibrant space. The club’s ongoing efforts reflect a deep-rooted commitment to enhancing the natural beauty and quality of life in Glasgow.
Community members interested in volunteering or supporting the club’s initiatives are encouraged to reach out to the Glasgow Garden Club for more information on how they can contribute to these impactful projects.
