BRAWA berm system installation ensures a safer future for our furry friends

May 16, 2024 | 10:17 AM

In a proactive move to safeguard its facilities and the precious lives it protects, the Barren River Animal Welfare Association (BRAWA) has recently completed the installation of a state-of-the-art berm system aimed at mitigating the risk of flooding.

This significant undertaking, which has been in the works since 2018, signals BRAWA’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the animals under its care. Rhonda Trautman, BRAWA’s Board President, spoke to WCLU on the process the facility went through to erect the safeguard.

The newly installed berm system, costing approximately $200,000, serves as a robust defense mechanism against potential floodwaters that could pose a threat to the organization’s facilities. Situated strategically around the premises, these berms act as barriers, redirecting and containing excess water to prevent it from infiltrating the animal shelter. While BRAWA explored a variety of possible solutions, including relocation, the berm system was settled on as the most effective and economical.

The project’s inception dates back to 2018, when American Engineers Inc. came up with the plans for the berm’s construction. Since then, meticulous planning, extensive consultations with experts, and diligent fundraising efforts have culminated in the successful completion of this vital infrastructure upgrade.

The installation of the berm system not only bolsters BRAWA’s flood resilience but also underscores its proactive approach to addressing environmental challenges. By implementing sustainable solutions, the organization aims to set a precedent for responsible stewardship of resources and infrastructure. Trautman went on to explain how the berm assists in mitigating future flooding.

With construction wrapped up, the new berm system faced a notable challenge, as south central Kentucky was pelted with severe weather. With high winds, hail and torrential rainfall, the BRAWA family was anxious to see how the new system would fair in keeping the shelter’s most precious four-legged assets safe. Needless to say, the staff could not be happier as Trautman explained.

Trautman, on behalf of BRAWA extended gratitude to the community and its support, which has made the shelter a safer place for Barren County’s most vulnerable population.
