After a hiatus forced by the pandemic, the thunderous sounds of bagpipes and the sights of kilt-clad athletes throwing cabers are set to return this year, not in Glasgow, but in Park City. The event, which was last held in 2019 before COVID-19 restrictions brought it to a halt after 33 years. The event promises to reignite the spirit of Scottish heritage and athleticism in Barren County.
This announcement came at Park City’s Commissioner Meeting, where Commissioner Gary Carroll updated members on the events progress.

Carroll explained one aspect of the Games that won’t be present at this years event, that of the cèilidh (pronounced KAY-lee) which is, “Basically a musical celebration by the bands and folk musicians, singers and dancing. Generally held the night before the games.” The park will host a karaoke night in its place.

While Carroll and his wife Karin Baldwin-Carroll spearheaded the resurrection of the Games, Colin Grant Adams, a Scottish musician who lives in the area, was invaluable in his contributions to making the Games happen.
“It’s culture, it’s history and it’s very family oriented, we plan on having diverse activities just for children,” Adams said. “So that’s what we’re aiming for, a celebration of our Celtic culture.”
Scheduled to take place on the grounds of Bell’s Tavern Park,  participants from across the region are expected to converge on Park City to test their strength, agility, and skill in these ancient sports.
The return of the Highland Games represents more than just a sporting event; it’s a celebration of culture and community. Attendees can look forward to immersing themselves in Scottish music, dance, and cuisine, with vendors offering a tantalizing array of traditional fare and merchandise.
For many, the Highland Games serve as a reminder of the resilience and spirit of camaraderie that have seen communities through challenging times. As the world emerges from the shadow of the pandemic, the return of cherished events like the Highland Games offers a beacon of hope and a chance to reconnect with the beloved tradition.
The Highland Games will only be taking place that day, as putting the event together has proved a herculean task for the commissioner and his committee, as Carroll explains.
The Highland Games are scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 1st. Organizers encourage attendees to come dressed in their finest tartan and prepare to cheer on participants as they compete in feats of strength and skill.
As the countdown begins to the much-anticipated return of the Highland Games, anticipation is building among both participants and spectators. With its rich history, vibrant atmosphere, and thrilling competitions, this year’s event promises to be one for the ages, marking a joyous return to tradition after a challenging period of uncertainty.
