The National Weather Service (NWS) is expecting the area to receive severe weather as the day progresses. This prompted the Barren County Emergency Management (BCEM)  Department to prepare residents should the weather become severe.

Garland Gilliam,  Director for the BCEM, spoke to WCLU about what to expect from this system.

With how volatile the atmosphere is today, residents are encouraged to be attentive to current conditions. Gilliam provides a couple of examples on how best to stay notified.

While staying informed is vital to safety, making sure that you have a plan in place to stay safe in the event of a tornado. Gilliam explained what to do for residents in doors.

Being in a vehicle during a tornado is not safe. The best course of action is to drive to the closest shelter. According to the NWS, if you are unable to make it to a safe shelter, either get down in your car and cover your head, or abandon your car and seek shelter in a low lying area such as a ditch or ravine.

Gilliam also spoke on how to manage the aftermath of severe weather, and how best to alert the proper authorities should you or a neighbor have an emergency.

A list of local shelters is attached to this article. For concerns or questions contact the BCEM at 270-651-4910 or 270-629-5933.
