GLASGOW – Barren County Schools has named John Myers as the next head coach of Barren County High School football, per a press release on Thursday.

Myers replaces a hole left by former head coach, Tommy Muse, who spent three seasons with the Trojans going 12-21 overall, finishing his career with a loss to McCracken County 49-27 in the first round of the class 6-A playoffs.

Per the release, Myers began his coaching career as an assistant football and head baseball coach at Mayfield High School in 1996. He then moved to Monroe County to coach football from 2000-2004. Beginning in 2004, John took the reigns of Russellville High School, where he went 118-57 in his tenure as head coach. Myers also lead the Panthers to 21 playoff wins, six district championships, and two regional championships/state semifinal appearances in his 14 seasons at the school. Following his time at Russellville, Myers became the offensive coordinator at Glasgow High School in 2018 and has remained a coach for the Scotties through 2023.

In a statement, Coach Myers stated, “I want to thank the Barren County Schools administration for providing me with the opportunity to be their head football coach. I am excited to meet the team, put a coaching staff together, and prepare for the upcoming season. Most importantly, it is about putting these young men in a position to be successful. I can’t wait to get their input and hear their goals for the program, while also communicating my expectations and vision going forward.”

Myers graduated from Hancock County High School in 1989 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Campbellsville College in 1993, where he also played quarterback. He completed his graduate program at Western Kentucky University in 1996. He also earned his master’s degree in Educational Leadership and completed both his principal and superintendent certifications at Western Kentucky University. He has served as a classroom teacher, principal, and district-level director over the course of his career in public education. He currently serves on the board of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for South Central Kentucky East.

Barren County School Superintendent Bo Matthews commented, “We are excited to name John Myers as the new head football coach of the Barren County Trojans. We interviewed applicants who possessed passion and experience, built successful programs, and were successful at the district, regional, and state levels. Coach Myers checks all of those boxes. He’s a communicator and a motivator. He has high expectations for our program and all associated with Barren County football. We welcome him to Barren County.”

Barren County finished the 2023 season with a 5-6 record, hosting their first playoff game in 23 years where they fell to McCracken County 49-27.
