LOUISVILLE – On Tuesday, Kentucky high school students in Hardin, Ballard, McCracken and Barren counties hosted registration drives as part of the “Co-ops Vote” program. As part of its annual civic engagement drive, Kentucky Electric Cooperatives partnered with Sophia Stover at Central Hardin High School, Hayes Gibson at Ballard Memorial High School, Cameron McDowell at McCracken County High School and Katelyn Huffaker at Barren County High School.
This past summer, Sophia, Hayes, Cameron and Katelyn attended the annual Youth Tour in Washington D.C. with Kentucky Electric Cooperatives and had the opportunity to meet with Kentucky’s top political leaders. They took home a desire to educate their friends, family and classmates about the importance of voting and raising voter turnout.
“It was an amazing opportunity to travel to D.C. this summer and walk in the footsteps of many historical leaders,” said Katelyn Huffaker of Barren County High School. “That inspired me to take everything I’d learned and experienced back home and share that with my community. One way I’ve gotten to showcase that is through today’s voter registration drive at Barren County High School.”
In 2022, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and Co-ops Vote registered over 400,000 voters. Kentucky’s electric cooperatives were proud to collaborate with these national organizations to increase voter registration across the country and here at home. With help from students like Sophia, Hayes, Cameron and Katelyn, KEC and Co-ops Vote are able to continue their work to register thousands of new voters and inspire others to care about elections.
“The Kentucky co-ops have always been about supporting the communities they serve,” said Joe Arnold, Vice President of Strategic Communications. “That’s why we are proud to stand beside these students who have taken an interest in government and politics and brought a new form of energy to their communities.”
Those who are not registered to vote have until October 10, 2023, to register and be eligible to vote in the general election on November 7, 2023. Stop by your local county clerk’s office to register in person or register online or by mail.
