GLASGOW – On Wednesday, Glasgow and Barren County High Schools invaded the Glasgow square for the inaugural Spirit Week Celebration event.

The event was hosted by Barren County Judge Executive, Jamie Bewley Byrd, who expressed the importance of bringing the community of Glasgow together through this crosstown rivalry.

“It’s a positive, safe environment for these kids and brings another form of recognition for these student-athletes,” said Byrd. “I love to be able to offer opportunities like this that can bring the community together and everyone can benefit from.” “Every sport we have [at both schools] play against each other, but football was the only one that hasn’t played until this year. The Barren County/Glasgow game, win or lose, was always the best game of the year, and so we want all these kids to have that memory.”

Glasgow and Barren County haven’t shared a gridiron matchup since September 2, 2016 due to several reasons, but are looking to renew their local rivalry with Friday’s matchup at Hank Royse Stadium.

“I think this game is important for everyone, and as neighboring schools, we already compete in every other venue,” said Barren County High School Principal, Amy Irwin. “I think it’s great to see us come back together and kick off a crosstown game together; it’s going to be a great Friday night.”

Regardless of the rivalry, sports bring everyone together and Glasgow Mayor, Henry Royse discussed the importance of having the community come together for this friendly rivalry.

“If you look around here, everybody is enjoying visiting with each other,” said Royse. “We have friends, and even though we’re rivals and will face off on the gridiron, there’s a lot of connection right here.” “I’m glad it’s [the rivalry] renewed, so we can strengthen our community, have a good health rivalry, and build memories.”

The undefeated Scotties will play host to the Trojans of Barren County at Hank Royse Stadium on Friday, September 15 with kickoff slated for 7PM. Barren County is coming off their first loss of the season when the Falcons of Monroe County defeated the Trojans 34-14 in Tompkinsville on September 8. Glasgow is hoping to continue their undefeated streak after dominating every team that has come their way so far.

WCLU will have the video and audio broadcast of the game with pregame coverage beginning at 6:30PM on 103.1FM and 1490AM, online at wcluradio.com/scottie, and on WCLURadio and the Scottie Channel on YouTube.
