Bullitt County man arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

LOUISVILLE – On Tuesday, A federal criminal complaint and arrest warrant were issued charging a Bullitt County man with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

According to the complaint, James Nott, 39, of Mt. Washington, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. On July 11, Nott possessed an AK-47 rifle, a .38 special, Charter Arms, revolver, and ammunition. Nott was prohibited from possessing a firearm because he had previously been convicted of the following felony offenses. On November 11, 2011, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky, Nott was convicted of possession of an unregistered destructive device and possession of a firearm by an unlawful user of marijuana.

The felon in possession of a firearm offense charged in today’s complaint, arose from a federal search warrant executed at Nott’s residence on Tuesday, in connection with a search for firearms and trafficked human remains.

Nott made his initial appearance Tuesday before a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky. Nott remains in federal custody and is scheduled for a detention hearing today at 3:00 p.m. If convicted, Nott faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. There is no parole in the federal system.

The FBI and the Mt. Washington Police Department are investigating the case. Assistant United States Attorneys Christopher Tieke and Stephanie Zimdahl are prosecuting the case.
