Kentucky State Police said Thursday afternoon that flooding is a concern across the area. They asked the public to avoid calling 911 to seek weather or road-related conditions. Call volumes are expected to be higher than usual. Counties north of Barren County were placed under a flood watch.

Several tips were published as a part of KSP’s weather announcement. They recommended motorists

  • Reduce speed while driving in heavy rains
  • Leave early to allow more travel time
  • Make sure your vehicle is in good operating condition(including but not limited to windshield wipers)
  • Drivers need to be prepared to meet the challenges of driving in adverse weather conditions. Make sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained
  • Increase the distance between vehicles to allow more time for slowing/stopping
  • Drive with headlights, not bright lights, on
  • Charge your cellular phone prior to travel
  • Dress appropriately for the weather
  • Do not drive into deep water
  • If you begin to hydroplane, steer in the direction you want to go
  • Avoid unnecessary travel

“We encourage all motorists to check the current conditions before leaving if they must travel,” a news release said.
