GLASGOW — A Hiseville-based dairy farm is expanding its reach to another store in Barren County.
Legacy Dairy is now on the shelves of South Gate Houchens in Glasgow. The family-owned dairy operation began about six years ago at a farm along Goodnight-Hisville Road.
“It’s just so satisfying to get up and to be able to care for our herd that we love so much and we’ve put so much time into,” said Ally Jones, whose family owns and operates the farm. “Being able to have a quality, nutritious, wholesome product to serve to our community and beyond is just so fulfilling.”
The journey to get their milk to Houchens stores began in 2020. Jones said every connection to the store was contacted, meetings were held and samples were delivered to Houchens Industries to no avail.
But something changed.
Jones said she was at a conference around Thanksgiving last year and met produce buyers from Houchens. One of those buyers, Stephanie Grant, was familiar with Legacy Dairy and promised to mention the product to the company’s new dairy buyer. That one connection ignited the process of getting milk from Hiseville to a Houchens grocery store.
“Once he finally got to try our milk, he was like, ‘What stores do you want?’” Jones said.
Jones said they obtained a permit to distribute and sell their milk in stores on Feb. 28, 2020. The first gallon of milk was placed in Houchens on Wednesday this week.
The dairy operation boasts a local and whole milk product. They have chocolate and white milk available. Jones said her father, Doug, is “serious” about the fresh quality of the local milk and has been known to deliver milk to stores at all hours of the day.
“It could be 8 o’clock at night in the middle of the week and Dad will be delivering milk from that morning,” she said.
Legacy Dairy distributes its milk as far north as the greater Louisville and Lexington areas. A full list of where the milk is available can be found here.
