Severe weather likely across the region, NWS says

Feb 15, 2023 | 3:54 PM

GLASGOW — Severe weather could impact much of southcentral Kentucky Wednesday evening and into Thursday. Here’s what we know.

The National Weather Service has placed counties west of Cumberland County — including Barren and Metcalfe counties — in an enhanced risk category. The categorization means strong to severe storms are possible late Wednesday and into Thursday.

The main threats are damaging winds and hail, though all severe hazards such as hail and flooding remain possible, according to the NWS. Most of the threat remains across southcentral Kentucky – especially on Thursday.

In a call with other Emergency Management agencies around the state Wednesday, local officials heard about the upcoming system. Two rounds of weather are likely, including one in the overnight hours from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Thursday, and one through the day Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Outside of showers and storms, gusty winds are possible. The confidence in these weather predictions was noted as a medium, they said.

A bulletin was issued Wednesday afternoon for cities across much of the south and Ohio River Valley, including Tupelo, Miss., Birmingham, Ala., Nashville, Tenn., Louisville, Ky., Cincinnati, Ohio, and Columbus, Ohio.
