GLASGOW — A man involved in the alleged murder of a Scottsville man last Friday appeared in Barren District Court for the first time on Monday afternoon.
James E. Campbell, 46, of Glasgow, appeared via Zoom from the Barren County Detention Center donned in orange jail clothing. He appeared alongside his attorney, Johnny Bell, for arraignment.
Campbell is charged with one count of murder and two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment. Police were called to the scene of a shooting at 1414 N. Race St. in Glasgow on Feb. 10 around 6:50 p.m. Campbell lives at 1414 N. Race St., according to the arrest citation.
Campbell was at the scene along with an unidentified woman, a male juvenile witness and Roger L. Noland, according to an arrest citation. Noland was allegedly shot and died sometime after he was taken to T.J. Samson Hospital.
Bell entered a plea of not guilty on behalf of Campbell and asked the court for a preliminary hearing. A recent assessment of Campbell’s likelihood to re-offend or fail to appear in court was low risk, which Bell cited as reasons Campbell should be released on a surety bond or a $50,000 property bond.
“I know this is a serious charge,” Bell said.
Resa Gardner, assistant commonwealth’s attorney, said the prosecution would object to any bond modifications at this time.
“As Mr. Bell noted, this is a very serious offense. It’s the most serious offense that I think you could have here,” Gardner said. “It’s hard to judge what his actions would be out on bond for a murder charge because he hasn’t been out on bond for such a serious charge before.”
Bell said his client has never been out on bond due to his lack of a criminal record except for a speeding ticket about 10 years ago. Gardner clarified that the claim was inaccurate.
“I mean I’m not going to change his bond,” said Judge Gabe Pendleton. “That assessment’s pretty much useless anyway.”
The judge said he would consider a change in Campbell’s bond after a preliminary hearing, which was set for Monday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. His bond is set at $50,000.
Details about what transpired before the alleged crime will be presented at the upcoming hearing. Police alleged Campbell fired upon Noland after a series of disagreements over text and then in person during a verbal altercation.
“During the course of the investigation, it was determined that above subject [Campbell] acted with intent to cause the death of the victim,” according to a citation narrative written by Captain Justin Kirkpatrick with Glasgow Police.
