GLASGOW — In a letter to the Dollar General Corporation, Glasgow Water Company and the city of Glasgow on Thursday, members of a the project development board overseeing the construction of a new judicial center notified them that they must vacate certain properties near downtown by May 1.

Members of the project development board voted to notify the property owners during a meeting on Wednesday afternoon. They previously agreed to give at least 90 days of notice to the former property owners when they were ready to use them.

Board member Rich Alexander drafted the letters to the former owners on Thursday.

The Dollar General property along West Main Street was sold several weeks ago to the Barren County Public Properties Corporation for $375,000. The group also purchased land in the same area from the city of Glasgow and the Glasgow Water Company.

“Immediately after that happens is a hazardous materials survey, which has to be done before we can touch any of the buildings,” said Tommy Gumm, the CEO of Alliance Corporation. “Once we have that information, we will be able to bid the remediation of that out.”

Gumm’s firm is serving as the construction manager for the justice center project. He said the Dollar General store and Glasgow Glass building could be demolished in about four months. Geotechnical surveys will be completed after those steps so the designers can begin creating the justice center’s foundation.

The city-owned land sold for the project includes a private parking area for staff at the Glasgow Department of Public Works. The parking area will also be vacated by May 1, according to the letter sent Thursday.

The Barren County Public Properties Corporation is the deed holder for all land purchased in the project to build the new justice center. That means Barren County government holds the rights to the properties.

In addition to the land containing the current Dollar General and Glasgow Glass Company buildings, a section of Ford Drive and about half of the green space next to the post office along West Main Street will be the site of the justice center. The property cut-off is along Front Street.

The PDB will meet again on Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. inside the Barren County Fiscal Courtroom, which is inside the Barren County Government Center at 117 N. Public Square in Glasgow.
