GLASGOW — Glasgow High’s Caroline Murphy signed a letter of intent to run track and field with Murray State University surrounded by friends and family last Friday.
The senior track stand-out has broken several school records, including the high jump, 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and the 4×100 relay. Murphy has also been named to several all-state teams, and holds varsity letters in basketball, soccer and track.
The track season won’t kick off until next spring, but Murphy’s already preparing to set new records.
“I’m really going to try for that state record, but we’ll see what happens,” she said. “I just want to get a little bit better each year.”
Practice on the high jumps and occasional indoor meets take up plenty of her off-season, Murphy said.
John Vaughn, track coach at Glasgow High, said Murphy is “good at everything.” He reflected on her career as a track team member from the early days when she was an eager sixth grade student. That eagerness blossomed into a stand-out athlete and an eventual state champion.
“We got to state, and her goal was 5’6,” Vaughn said. “It was the last jump of the day, and she won it. It was very exciting.”
Murphy was presented a state championship ring during the ceremony following those accomplishments earlier this summer.
Murphy said she plans to pursue a business-related major – likely business administration or marketing.
“I just love the environment at Murray State. I love the coaches. I’ve just had a great time both times I’ve visited,” she said. “It just seemed like this perfect place for me.”
She is the daughter of Steven and Regina Murphy. View a full list of Murphy’s accolades here.
