GLASGOW — The Glasgow Independent School Board met in regular session Monday evening. The item on the agenda with the most attention was the construction update to the new South Green Elementary School.

The process has faced many challenges. Some were foreseen such as digging through the icy terrain in the winter months, the springtime rain causing uneven surfaces and the excruciating summer heat threatened the safety of the workers. Other challenges were not planned, such as a concrete shortage in late May-early June.

But through it all, the construction has kept moving forward, and Alliance Corporation was proud to announce that a roof will soon be placed on the new building as soon as next month.

“When we started the project, we set a milestone date we thought was very aggressive,” Tommy Gumm, CEO of Alliance Corporation told the board. “We wanted to start roofing the building in October. I believe we are going to be able to make that.”

Glasgow Superintendent, Dr. Chad Muhlenkamp, who served as the Director of Facilities before obtaining his new role, was very complimentary of the efforts of Alliance Corporation, meeting all expectations while facing extreme challenges.

“Alliance is putting together a really great product for us,” he said. “With the concrete shortages and different components that have been happening throughout the construction process, they have been able to really stay on track and on schedule while holding things to a great standard.”

As far as the rest of the construction goes, workers for Alliance Corporation have all of the second-floor decking set, almost all bar joists have been set in the cafeteria, and the gymnasium is 100% up to bearing height, according to Gumm.

Other items on the agenda included the appointing of Randy Wilkinson as Facilitator for the Local Planning Committee. School Board member Mary Burchett-Bower was appointed to represent the board on the committee along with three members of the Glasgow community. The board also approved extending the contract of Larry Hammond as Superintendent Advisor.

The school board will meet again next month although a date and time has not been released at this moment.
