HAYWOOD — One person was arrested Tuesday after a vehicle crashed at a Dollar General Store just south of Glasgow.

Authorities arrived and learned from witnesses at the scene that a man in a truck collided with the rear of another vehicle and drove through a field before he crashed into the store. Police said the metal siding of the store was collapsed and freezers inside were damaged.

James D. Storms III, 32, was identified as the driver. He apparently looked at an officer blankly when asked about his condition. He did not have visible injuries, according to an arrest citation.

Storms reeked of alcohol, had blood shot eyes and swayed while police talked to him. He was later determined to have a blood alcohol content level of .259.

Police charged Storms with one count of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, failure to produce an insurance card and failure to maintain required insurance. He also faces two counts of first degree criminal mischief.

A unit from Glasgow Police responded despite the store’s location within the jurisdiction of the sheriff’s office. No county units were available at the time of the call, according to a Glasgow Police spokesperson.

The Dollar General Store was closed while damage assessments were completed. It’s unclear if the store remains closed.
