GLASGOW — Onward and upward is the next phase in the construction process of the new South Green Elementary School.

The project had hit several snags the last few months; April rain showers caused delays in the construction of the building’s foundation and there were concrete shortages in June. This month, workers are dealing with another problem – the heat.

“Hot weather has been a challenge,” Tommy Gumm, CEO of Alliance Corporation told the Glasgow Board of Education. “We’ve been starting early and knocking off a little bit earlier in the afternoons…but I’m pleased with how things are going. At our last progress meeting, it looked like we were hitting our scheduled dates so that’s a good thing.”

Fortunately, these problems the workers have faced are minor and, according to Alliance Corporation, they are ready to start building vertically.

“We’ve poured several floor slabs and we have set some of the second floor and roof precasts,” Gumm said. “That is good for the fact that things are moving upward to try and get a roof on this building as soon as we can.”

New superintendent, Dr. Chad Muhlenkamp, who had been the Director of Facilities before attaining his new role in the Glasgow Independent School District, has been extremely hands during this construction process and is very satisfied with the progress that is being made.

“It’s going well,” he said. “There’s still lots of different pieces moving around. Lots of walls are going up at the new building and in the existing building, they have started the clean-up process to get ready for the start of school.”

The school board will meet in regular session again in early September.
