CENTER — Authorities in Metcalfe County responded to a single vehicle collision Wednesday morning, and one person was arrested after allegedly driving a vehicle into the side of a church.
The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. along Pleasant Valley Church Road. Deputies responded to investigate and discovered a vehicle had crashed.
Deputies alleged Kristen L. Matthews, 21, drove her 2010 Mazda passenger car onto the property of a local church and intentionally crashed into the church several times with the vehicle. Deputies said she accelerated the vehicle inside the church and loudly sang church hymns. She was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit.
Matthews was apparently under the influence of a controlled substance when she drove the vehicle into the church. Authorities did not reveal the name of the church.
She faces charges relating to first degree criminal mischief, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance and second degree fleeing or evading police. She remains lodged at the Barren County Detention Center.
Matthews is expected to appear in court on July 27 at 8:30 a.m.
