GLASGOW — Youth involvement in local sports leagues increased again this year.
Eddie Furlong, Glasgow Parks and Recreation director, told the Glasgow City Council Monday evening youth sports involvement across city leagues continues to grow each year. Of those sports, he said youth soccer enrollment was successful this past season.
“That is the one program where we’re going to have to look at doing something in the very near future as far as field space,” Furlong said.
Though sports enrollment increased, the aging equipment and status of city parks continues to be a concern for city officials. Furlong said parks in the city need improvements, which are part of his department’s master plan.
Gorin Park is the city’s oldest. It opened in 1950. The youngest is Beaver Creek Park, which opened over 20 years ago along Beaver Trail.
Beaver Creek Park was slated to undergo paving work at both of its lots this week. Officials also have plans to install a new playground this summer and widen the walking trail this fall.
Some improvements were made over the last year at Gorin Park, he said. A mural was painted on one of the park’s basketball courts and a new shelter was constructed. A second mural is expected later this year.
Weldon Park’s new playground equipment was featured on the front cover of Mircale Recreation’s sales catalog. The feature showcases the city’s new pour-and-play playground. It also featured local children.
