GLASGOW — It’s not every day a boardgame is named after places like Glasgow, but an Ohio-based company recently unveiled “Glasgow-opoly,” a Monopoly-like game centered around the city.
Late for the Sky, a Cincinnati-based boardgame developer, has made “opoly” style gameboards since 1984. The company began making university themed boards before progressing toward urban cities and now rural boards.
Michael Schulte, marketing manager for Late for the Sky, said “it was a no brainer” when the company shifted its production to locally themed boards.
“I just feel people more identify with their town playing a game than they would playing the original version,” Schulte said. “Solely because you know the landmarks in the game.”
Through a partnership with WalMart, the company receives input regarding which communities would be best suited for a version. They research local tourism and Chamber of Commerce sites and communicate ideas before developing and printing the boards.
The Glasgow-themed game has stops at places like Bounty of the Barrens, Rogers Wells Boulevard and local restaurants. The company also made a Tompkinsville-themed board a few months ago, Schulte said.
The board retails for $19.99.
