ELIZABETHTOWN — Elizabethtown police are seeking two suspects involved in stealing a “substantial amount of money” Monday morning from an ATM machine at Wilson & Muir Bank in Elizabethtown.
Two people in a stolen van pulled up to the ATM machine at 250 W. Dixie Ave. and hooked a tow strap from the van to the machine, according to Elizabethtown Police Department spokesman Chris Denham. He said the pair then pulled it from its foundation.
Denham said it appears two men were involved in the theft. The suspects reportedly left the van at the bank and fled on foot. Police soon learned the van had been stolen shortly before the theft.
Police were alerted to the theft by an alarm from the bank.
Denham said the theft follows “unfortunately a national trend”’ of crimes from ATMs.
The suspects will face charges of theft by unlawful taking of more than $10,000, a Class C felony punishable by five to 10 years in prison, if convicted, and first-degree criminal mischief, a Class D felony punishable by one to five years in prison, if convicted.
Denham said police have video surveillance of the incident.
