Winds, flooding possible Thursday as fronts meet

Feb 17, 2022 | 5:30 AM

GLASGOW — Gusting winds and heavy rainfall lies ahead Thursday for much of southern Kentucky.

Much of Wednesday evening into Thursday was the onset of gusting winds. Those are set to remain across the region Thursday as two fronts collide and a cool down is on the horizon.

Glasgow-Barren County Emergency Management says weather forecasters released data indicating a small threat for isolated tornadoes. Up to two inches of rain could accumulate by Thursday afternoon, however.

Highlights:

  • Winds coming in from the south gusting 45-50 mph ahead of a cold front.
  • There is a risk of severe weather in southern Kentucky –especially between 1pm and 7pm CST. Damaging winds is the concern and there’s a low chance of isolated tornadoes. That is always possible when fronts meet and move across the area, according to a GBCEM Facebook post.
  • About 1-2″ of rainfall could be seen by this evening, locally heavier amounts are possible in southern Indiana and far north central Kentucky including Louisville, possibly leading to local flooding.

“We always stress SAFETY FIRST!,” according to that Facebook post. “With the amount of rainfall we are subject to get, TURN AROUND DON’T DROWN!”

Safe Rooms across Barren County are in a open-ready status.

“If you feel the need to utilize, please do so. We ask though, whatever you bring with you please leaves with you,” they said.
