MAYFIELD, Ky. — The tornadoes that blasted through Kentucky in early December left many areas vulnerable to crime and looting. The Glasgow Police Department sent several officers to the Mayfield area last week to help the Graves County Sheriff’s Office with patrol of the area.
On Friday, a call came across the radio of an armed robbery in progress. On patrol in the area, Glasgow Police Major Terry Flatt said they soon had the suspect vehicle in sight.
“We were able to locate the vehicle probably within a couple of minutes when the officer attempted to make that traffic stop the vehicle fled from officers,” Flatt said.
A passenger in the vehicle then began firing shots at officers and the vehicle was able to get away. Minutes later, a KSP trooper located a vehicle matching the description from the armed robbery, and a second pursuit began.
Shots were fired from the vehicle at KSP, at which time a trooper returned fire, striking a subject located inside of the vehicle and ending the pursuit.
A male was transported to Baptist Health Paducah where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. He was sent to the McCracken County Jail after his release where a second subject was held.
Glasgow Police Chief Jennifer Arbogast is a strong proponent of ongoing training with officers, often times doubling the required number of hours and is proud of the way they handled this situation.
“I am very proud of all the officers that work for Glasgow,” Arbogast said.
Major Flatt said the area was congested at the time and they are fortunate no one was hurt.
“Well I’m very proud of all the officers, they followed the proper training and we’re very fortunate that no citizens were hurt or harmed,” Flatt said.
No officers were injured in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
