GLASGOW, Ky – Coming up next Wednesday, Barren County Schools will be back in session and yesterday afternoon, students and their families were back on campus to pick schedules, find bus routes and talk to faculty & staff.

The crowd that came out to the back-to-school bash packed the parking lots and the hallways were filled to the brim.

Emily Matthews, Barren County Nutrition Program Assistant at the Ag Extension Office, came out and shared some recipes that she said not only tasted good, but were easy to make.

“These are great for easy after-school snacks,” Matthews said. “We have a berry crunch roll-up, that’s great. We have all kinds of goodies and school supplies for the kids and other information about our after-school programs.”

Brittany Cleveland and Evanna Shirley were there representing the 21st Century After-School Program middle and high school students.

Cleveland says that along with the typical programming, like homework help and tutoring, they would be including some really cool programming as well.

“We have CSI and cooking and archery,” she said. “Plus we have mentoring programs, the kids are going to have tons of fun.”

Evanna Shirley says she is excited about a new partnership that will start soon.

“We’re going to be partnering with the Boys & Girls Club so we’re going to have a more inclusive environment for those students this year,” she said.

Derrick Waggoner, from Alliance Counseling Services, was on site offering guests a rundown of the services they provide.

Waggoner, who is the Director of Supportive Client Services, says that it is important to attend events like this.

“It’s really great right now,” he said. “Especially after COVID last year. Some people might be new to the area, maybe, and might not have the resources to know what’s going on. It’s a fresh start for everybody this year.”
