GLASGOW, Ky. — The Glasgow Water Company recently received its 15th consecutive award from the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, Division of Water.
The award is called the Area-Wide Optimization Program (AWOP) designation. The AWOP program, outlined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), establishes water quality standards that exceed minimum federal and state requirements through optimized filtration plant performance for turbidity and microbial removal.
“This award reflects a commitment by our staff to continually be the best and produce the best quality water within our industry,” said Scott Young, General Manager. “Without the dedication and hard work of our certified treatment plant operators, lab analysts, and microbiologists this award would not be possible.”
The GWC was also one of only seven water systems that achieved the AWOP Disinfectants and Disinfection By Products goals for Kentucky.
The GWC is the 10th largest water producer in Kentucky and provides regional drinking water to five surrounding utilities. The GWC service area encompasses 444 square miles while maintaining 902 miles of water mains serving approximately 20,000 customer connections. On average, GWC operations treat over 3.1 billion gallons of quality drinking water annually.
“The AWOP program has become our standard operating procedure and the results show,” said Tim Smiley, Water Plant Superintendent, “This award is an honor, validating the commitment by the GWC Staff, Administration and Board to provide the means to produce quality, safe drinking water that exceeds federal and state standards.”
