South Central Rural Telephone Cooperative Corporation has commenced work in Glasgow on and expansion program estimated to coast one million dollars according to an announcement by Keith Jewell, president. Expansion to the Glasgow office space to provide for more equipment and office space is being done under the direction of Dixon Rapp, local architect. Mr. Jewell stated that bids will be opened Dec. 15 covering construction of outside lined and cables to implement the addition.

The newest addition to the furniture and appliance family in Glasgow will be the Standard Furniture Co. which will soon open in the building at the corner of North Race and W. Main Streets, formerly occupied by Houchens Market No. 2. Maurice Wolfe, present manager of the Standard Farm Store, will also manage the new business.

BUNCHE WINS 4TH STRAIGHT
On Tuesday night, Ralph Bunch overcame a 21-20 first quarter deficit at the hand of Scottsville to score an impressive 83-70 win over the Pointers. Gene Wells, the high scorer of the night for the Bluehawks with 24 paced the win for Bunche. The Scottsville defense concentrated on Charlie Hunter who had been the leading Hawk scorer in the first three games. All the Bunche starters scored in double figures.

Remember the Big Annual Christmas Parade to be held in Glasgow Monday morning, December 5th at 11 a.m. There will be 36 units including six bands and nine floats participating. Plan now to be in Glasgow Monday to see the parade and get started with your Christmas shopping. There are only 21 days left until Christmas.

Christmas trees are now on sale at the Williams Sunoco Service Station on North Race St. at prices from $2 to $5. Proceeds will be used by the Glasgow Jaycees for gifts for underprivileged children of the city. You are urged to go by and the tree of your choice and help this worthwhile cause.

One of the largest crowds in recent years assembled in Glasgow Monday to witness one of the largest and best Christmas parades ever held under the direction of the Retail Merchants with Hank Royce, Chairman. The crowd on hand was estimated as high as 14,000 to watch the school-prepared floats, the seven high-school bands, as well as the many other units that participated in the parade.

COUNTY BANK LOSES $3,000 IN MONDAY MORNING HOLDUP
Two armed men entered the Hiseville Deposit Bank Monday morning as the bank opened for business and forced three employees and a customer to lie down behind the counter while they escaped with an estimated twenty-five hundred to three thousand dollars. Shortly after the broad daylight holdup, a red and white Edsel car was found abandoned about two miles from Hiseville and is believed to be the get-a-way car. The vehicle was reported stolen in Louisville on Saturday. According to local law enforcement officers, this bank robbery was the first in barren Co. in many years.

The Glasgow Common Council, meeting last night in regular session at the City Building, approved Mayor William L. Grissom’s appointment of two new council members to fill vacancies. Named to fill the unexpired terms from the fourth Ward were Mrs. Katherine Peterson and Ronald Hicks. The vacancies were created in the same ward after the resignation of Roy Jordan and Quentin Billingsley, earlier this year. Hicks, a local accountant, resides in Green Acres and Mrs. Peterson lives on Hutcherson Drive.

FINAL CENSUS REPORT GIVES COUNTY 28,303
Barren County’s population was 28,203 at the time of the 1960 census, according to final official population statistics. Of the count’s population, 35.6 per cent, or 10,069 are urban residents of Glasgow. Cave City is creditded with a population of 1,418.

Stanley Walker, local insurance man, was congratulated by Henry Evans, manager of the Winn-Dixie store after Walker’s lucky ticket was drawn from the hat for the new auto which was given away by the store Sunday night. Walker, who said he had never won anything before, had just one ticket on the car. The store manager wished walker a merry Christmas and added that he knew Walker would have a happy new year.

BAREFOOT BURGLAR LOOTS LAUNDY
Burglars, who operated barefooted, last night stole approximately $200 from the Crown Laundry on Wayne St. Entry was made by breaking a side window. The lock was broken off a steel cabinet in the office and money taken.

Howard Malcolm Jones, local CPA, is the new president of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce following the election of officers for 1961 Monday. W. E. “Em” Cook is the retiring president. Other officers elected at the meeting were Clovis Sadler, first vice president; Felix Murray, second vice president; Hugh Bryson, treasurer; Mrs. Katherine Billingsley, secretary; and E. L. Kerley, secretary-emeritus.

The first step in the city’s move to take over the Kentucky Utilities electric facilities here was made Friday s the condemnation suit was filed in the county court clerk’s office. The next step in what is expected to be a long court battle will be the naming of three commissioners to appraise the system.

ETHEL FANT ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR CLERK
Mrs. Ethel F. Fant, County Court Clerk of Barren Co. for the last 3 years, announced today that she would be a candidate for re-election to that office subject to the May Democratic primary. Mrs. Fant is currently serving out the unexpired term of her late husband, Robert S. Fant. She is a native of Natchez, Miss., she is a graduate of the Charity Hospital School of Nursing of New Orleans and served in the Army Nurses Corps during World War II.

Clyde Martin announced Wednesday afternoon that he has purchased the entire interest of the firm, Martin and Bishop Insurance agency. The present firm name will be retained for the business and Mr. Martin stated that the same complete insurance services that have been provided for their many customers during the past years will continue.

An end to the crowded conditions at the Hiseville and Temple Hill schools was given a huge shot-in-the-arm Friday ant a meeting of the Barren Co. School Board. Mr. Mitchell Dave, County School Superintendent, announce that the members of the board approved preliminary plans for a new elementary school of twelve rooms to be built in the South-East section of Barren Co. In addition to helping the conditions of the two above schools, the new building would be used to consolidate all of the rural one-room schools.
