GLASGOW, Ky. — Barren County High School is preparing to host the 15th district basketball tournament.
The tournament begins March 15 at 5:30 p.m. for boys with a double header between Monroe County and Allen County-Scottsville. Glasgow and Barren County are scheduled to play at 7:45 later that evening. The girls tournament begins March 16.
Each school will allocate a specific number of vouchers for their games – these vouchers will serve as health surveys. Spectators must pay $6 at the gate after turning in their voucher, said Barren County High School Athletic Director, Warren Cunningham.
“Our fans have vouchers for the regular season but those vouchers won’t work for the district tournament,” Cunningham said.
Coaches cards and other forms of entrance will not be permitted.
“All fans must have a voucher or a tournament pass in order to get in,” Cunningham said.
BCHS will adhere to regular COVID-19 safety guidelines: mandatory mask-wearing, social distancing and reduced stadium capacity.
And the gym will be cleaned between games.
“We will be clearing, emptying and cleaning the gym in between games,” Cunningham said. “When that game ends everybody will leave. We will have the gym cleaned and then the fans can come in for the second game.”
Cunningham explained the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) advised in a recent email that schools can increase their capacity to 25%.
“Talking with our administration and then the other athletic directors from the other three schools, we are going to increase our capacity some – maybe not to that level, to 25%,” Cuningham said, “I just don’t know that everybody feels super comfortable doing that – making that jump right now.”
The school plans to operate at 20% capacity. Approval from the Barren River Health Department is pending.
“And we think we can get plenty of our fans in for each school at that number,” Cunningham said.
