Locals join to provide cooling station amid rising temperatures

Jul 21, 2020 | 10:43 AM

GLASGOW, Ky. – Heat indices are expected to soar past 100 degrees Tuesday, and members of the community have stepped up to provide iced water to those without shelter.

Shelter Barren County, River Lake Church and the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store are providing a cooling station near downtown Glasgow. The station is in place at the Re-Store, which is located at 506 W. Main St.

Mandy Goessling, the founder of Shelter Barren County, said the initiative is searching for donations. River Lake Church donated four cases of water and a cooler, but the three groups hope to receive additional donations to supply more water.

“Anyone who needs that, please take advantage of it,” Goessling said. “Also, if anybody could donate water, that would be great. There’s not a freezer for ice, so we’re asking for small cash donations.”

A nearby gas station has ice for sale, and cash donations will be used to buy it.

Businesses in Glasgow are also encouraged to donate water and shade for those exposed to the rising temperatures.

“Anyone who needs a place to go sit down and cool off can walk around the Re-Store,” Goessling said. “There will be iced water provided inside for free.”

The cooling station will be available inside the Re-Store from noon until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Goessling said the station will be available as donations continue to pour into the initiative.
