BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Highway crews from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 3 area remain on alert and have worked on last-minute preparations for snow & ice response deployment which is expected to happen later today.
The National Weather Service (NWS) out of Louisville has updated its weather forecast for the incoming winter weather storm. All District 3 counties remain under an Ice Storm Warning or Winter Weather Advisory, though the ice accumulation totals have decreased since yesterday’s forecast.
The entire District 3 region is down to 1/10 – 1/4 inch of icing predicted. Hazardous driving conditions throughout the District are expected to happen after dark tonight with the western counties being impacted first. Kentucky State Offices were closed Thursday and will be closed Friday as Gov. Beshear has declared a State of Emergency. The KYTC joins other agencies advising motorists to take this winter weather system seriously and avoid travel overnight Thursday into Friday morning.
Crews will be focusing their efforts on “A” Snow and Ice Priority Routes that include Interstates, Expressways, and 4-lane U.S. Highways. The priority road maps are available at Snow and Ice Maps | KYTC.
As areas of freezing rain and sleet develop over the region (NWS) Louisville suggests driving conditions could deteriorate rapidly – some downed trees and power outages are possible. Bridges and overpasses will freeze before the roadway. Ice could also be hard to spot on the roadway while driving.
Motorists are advised to maintain a high level of awareness by monitoring area news media outlets and District 3 social media accounts for forecast updates for road condition updates. The updated forecast for the District 3 area can be found on the National Weather Service Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/NWSLouisville
