STAFF REPORT
Glasgow News 1
The Glasgow Fire Department is accepting applications through Nov. 2, with about four openings, Battalion Chief Justin Wells said. Physical agility testing is scheduled for Nov. 7 at 8 a.m. at the department’s Beaver Trail training facility.
Wells discussed the hiring process during an interview on WCLU’s Coffee and Conversation with Todd Steenbergen. Interested applicants can visit cityofglasgow.gov and select the employment icon to find a full job description and access the application.
The physical agility test will include a 1.5-mile run, push-ups, sit-ups and a grip strength test. Candidates will also drag a water-filled, 2.5-inch hose 100 feet, Wells said.
Wells advised candidates to train before testing but said the department is looking for more than strength and speed.
“We look for people with determination that are motivated and aren’t going to quit just when something gets hard,” Wells said.
The department’s work schedule is 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off, according to Wells. He described that as every work day feeling like a Friday.
People interested in the work can stop by either fire station to ask questions, speak with firefighters and tour the station, Wells said. Asked whether women are encouraged to apply, he said, “Absolutely.”
