The Barren County Land Use Committee had its final meeting Tuesday evening to review the latest draft of a proposed countywide zoning ordinance ahead of a public hearing next week.
Eight public meetings, including four town halls held over the summer, have taken place to inform residents and encourage public input before the Barren County Fiscal Court considers a vote on adopting countywide zoning.
Representatives from Kentucky Stewart, LLC, the consulting firm hired to help draft part of the ordinance, joined the meeting remotely to answer questions and clarify language in the proposal.
Joint City-County Planning Commission Director Kevin Myatt reviewed several changes to the draft, including a discussion about protecting prime farmland.
Committee members considered whether the ordinance should include language restricting alternative energy projects, such as solar farms, from being built on prime farmland. Myatt noted that the planning commission would ultimately have the authority to approve or deny such projects under the proposed zoning rules.
Prime farmland is already identified by the Natural Resources Conservation Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The public hearing is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 19, at Glasgow City Hall beginning at 7 p.m., giving residents a final opportunity to weigh in before the Fiscal Court considers whether to adopt countywide zoning. The public hearing will be part of the Joint City-County Planning Commission meeting.
