Griffin Jackson closed his sophomore golf season by finishing fifth in the Boys’ State Golf Tournament.
Jackson was consistent throughout the two-day final. He shot 71 on Day 1 at Bowling Green Country Club, and 71 on Day 2. That put him at 2-under par in the finals, two strokes behind Luc Kelty of St. Xavier and Anderson Lang of Frederick Douglass. Lang beat Kelty in a playoff to win the individual title.
On Wednesday, Jackson bounced back after shooting 1-over par on the front nine holes. He got back to even-par with a birdie on No. 14, then added a birdie on No. 16 to get to 1-under par. He made par on every other hole on the back nine.
Luke Ebel of Lexington Christian, who led after Day 1, shot 2-over par 74 on Day 2, but that was still good enough for him to finish at 3-under for the tournament. He and Greyson Cloern of St. Xavier tied for third in the tournament, which left Jackson at fifth.
St. Xavier won the team title by shooting 8-under par total 568. It was the only team with an under par team total. Christian Academy of Louisville was second, George Rogers Clark placed third and Bowling Green — winner of the Region 3 Tournament — finished fourth.
On the first day of the tournament Tuesday, Jackson opened at the No. 10 tee box and shot 1-under par through the first six holes, but then hit a rough patch.
He bogeyed holes 16 and 18 and was at 1-over par at the turn to the front nine.
Jackson birdied Hole 2 to get back to even, and birdied No. 5 to climb back to 1-under. He followed that with a bogey on No. 6 and dropped back to even par with three holes to play.
He went par, birdie, par on the final three holes of Day 1 to get to 1-under par 71.
