The Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library in Glasgow is turning Halloween into an opportunity to give back, with a children’s costume drive running from September 1 through October 31.
Library staff are asking community members to donate new or gently used children’s Halloween costumes to help make the holiday more accessible for local families.
Donated costumes will be made available free of charge in the library lobby from October 21 through October 31, according to the library
That window gives parents and caregivers about 10 days to browse the donated costumes and find something their children can wear for trick-or-treating.
Organizers say the effort is designed to help families who may not be able to purchase costumes this year, while also putting gently used costumes back to good use.
The library has shared a few guidelines for donations. Used costumes should be cleaned or washed before being dropped off. Costumes should not have broken pieces, and any batteries that no longer work should be removed from items before they are donated.
The library is asking donors to place costumes in a box or bag when dropping them off.
Officials say leftover costumes at the end of the drive will be taken to Goodwill, extending the impact of the donations beyond the initial Halloween giveaway.
The library encourages residents who have costumes their children have outgrown or no longer use to consider donating them during the September 1–October 31 collection period.
Staff say that every donation can help make Halloween more fun and less stressful for families in the Glasgow area.
