Glasgow Musicale is opening its new season with a free, family-friendly concert featuring folksinger and poet Michael Johnathon on Sunday, Sept. 20.
The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. at First Christian Church, located at 1100 N. Race St. in Glasgow, and organizers say tickets are free and families are invited.
Johnathon is described as a log cabin dwelling folksinger and poet who created the syndicated, live-audience broadcast WoodSongs.
According to organizers, WoodSongs is heard on WEKU, WUKY and nearly 500 radio stations, and also airs as a TV series on KET, the Kentucky Channel and PBS TV affiliates nationwide.
He also created the TV series WoodSongs Kids, which is described by organizers as “Mister Rogers meets the Grand Ole Opry.”
WoodSongs Kids airs on KET and PBS stations across America and is supported by Kentucky Tourism.
Beyond his work on stage and on air, Johnathon and the national WoodSongs fan base have collected and distributed more than 5,000 musical instruments to musicians who lost everything in the tornadoes of western Kentucky, the floods of Appalachia and the storms of Helene.
Organizers say more than 1,000 people stood in line at Warren Wilson College in Asheville to receive free guitars, banjos, fiddles, mandolins, cellos and other instruments.
Johnathon is also the recipient of the Milner Award, described as the highest award given to any artist in Kentucky, presented by Gov. Andy Beshear.
In addition to 23 albums and six published books, his latest release is a book of poetry titled “SEEDS.”
Organizers report the book has already been nominated as Kentucky Poet Laureate and will be featured at the Kentucky Book Festival in November.
Glasgow Musicale officials say this concert is part of their ongoing effort to bring notable artists and cultural programming to the local community.
Event organizers also note that the program is funded in part by the Kentucky Humanities Council using funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
