Two of Glasgow’s radar speed signs will soon have new homes as city officials continue looking at ways to address speeding concerns throughout the city.
During a brief meeting of the Glasgow Infrastructure Committee on Tuesday, Street Department Manager Wes Billingsley said two existing electronic signs, which display a driver’s speed as they approach, are expected to be relocated to New Salem Road and Leslie Avenue sometime this week.
The discussion prompted Mayor Henry Royse to ask Public Works Superintendent Jim McGowan whether the city should consider budgeting for additional signs.
At approximately $1,700 each, Royse suggested a couple more could give the city additional options for addressing speeding concerns without continually relocating its existing signs. No formal action was taken on purchasing additional units.
The committee also received updates on several ongoing and recently completed road projects, including work on Hilltopper Way near Western Kentucky University’s Glasgow campus.
McGowan said the Hilltopper Way project was completed ahead of the beginning of WKU’s fall semester. The road had previously been identified as a priority through the city’s Municipal Road Aid program.
With that project finished, McGowan said Reynolds Road will be the next roadway addressed using Municipal Road Aid funding.
They also received an update on the reconstruction of the retaining wall along West Main Street near the Glasgow Public Square, a project that is now largely complete.
The approximately $262,000 project was awarded earlier this year to Outdoor Specialties & Landscaping, LLC, an Elizabethtown-based company specializing in retaining walls. The work replaces a deteriorating wall supporting a city-owned parking lot along West Main Street.
McGowan said Tuesday that the majority of the work has been completed, with the contractor now waiting on handrails for newly constructed stairs leading from the parking lot above the wall down to West Main Street.
The company is under contract to finish the project by mid-October, a deadline McGowan said he is confident it will meet, barring any unforeseen delays.
Tuesday’s agenda also included updates from the city’s stormwater, sanitation and landfill operations, though much of the committee’s discussion was routine.
